I always want my students to enter my room and feel welcomed where there feel comfortable and WANT to learn. In my classroom, HIGH expectations are always implemented. Expectation is given from day one that we will be working from bell to bell. I believe every student can learn, if they are given the opportunity to do so. I make sure to set high standards for my students, but make sure they are equal throughout. I think it is important to have rubrics, keys, and other sources to make sure classroom is graded fairly and effectively.
When high expectations are performed, students will often work harder than expected. They are a product of their environment. If you don't expect a lot out of them, they will always give you mediocre results. However, when setting high, consistent expectations, it is amazing what results you see.
I make no excuses for my students or their abilities to learn. I believe they are able and capable to learn and I don't want to give them the ability to escape from that. Of course sometimes instructions are differentiated for all different academic levels, however, they are all expected to perform and to perform proficiently.
High expectations were a proven success from my last years Biology class. They outperformed all of their CASE 21 indicator tests and when it came to the actual state test, they scored higher than expected. I received an award last month because of their outperformance in Biology.
